Powder highlight can be a fun addition to your makeup routine. It is used to do exactly that, highlight certain features on your face where you want to glow. Below I’ll go into detail about the different shades of highlight, powder vs cream, where to apply, and a few quick tips!
How to Use Powder Highlight
Highlight should be applied after you have set your foundation and added contour and blush. If you want to learn more about foundation and contour, check out this blog post. To figure out where to add illuminator, look in the mirror and find the high points of your face. Adding illuminator to those places makes those features pop and glow! The places I like to add illuminator are, tops of cheek bones, tip of nose, cupid’s bow, right under brows, and inner eye. If you are new to illuminator, start small and just add some under your brows and on the tops of your cheek bones. You will love how it looks!
Powder vs. Cream
Powder illuminator is best for oily skin or if you use setting powder that creates a matte finish. Use a fan brush to apply so you get that even coverage. Remember, a little goes a long way so gently swipe or swirl the brush and lightly swipe the areas you want highlighted. You can also use the tip of your finger to apply at the inner eye, down the bridge of your nose, and anywhere else you’d like!
Cream illuminator is best for dry or combination skin, or if you use setting spray to achieve a dewy glow. Use your finger to apply to the places I mentioned above and use a brush or sponge to blend. Be sure to avoid places where you may have oil build-up over time, like your T-zone.
